    Form Check Friday for 2020-07-24

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 11:07 PM PDT

As always, please give last week's thread a once over for any form checks that could use some feedback.

    All previous Form Check Fridays

Without further ado, please post a video (or if you can only manage a photo for a static hold) of the move you'd like to be critiqued.

    Your video should be:

    • Oriented the correct way
    • Be formatted such that there isn't unnecessary video of you preparing for the move (keep it short)
    • Have the important bits of the movement clearly visible (multiple angles is always useful)
    • You may want to show a regression of the current exercise as well, but try to keep each video to one "set" of movements
    • Include the whole body
    • Of you

Include in your post the following details:

    • Basic Details: (Age, Weight, Height)
    • What move you are attempting (be specific in regards to progressions
    • Indicate whether this is a max attempt (holds/reps), or specify what your current best performance is
    • Any specific questions you have about your form

    Rules for critiquing form

    • Constructive criticism only
    • You need to either be able to complete the move yourself, or have experience in training others to complete the move (no "I read an article on how to do these")
    • Feel free to point others to resources that address their form and/or questions if you aren't "qualified" to give them advice yourself

If your form is awesome, consider posting it in the Show Off Sunday thread!

If you dun goofed, consider posting the out-take in the Slip Up Saturday thread!

Made a site to guide you through the Recommended Routine and track your progression

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 03:50 PM PDT

    RR Coach website

What's good everybody, I've been a longtime lurker here and have been following the RR myself on/off for about a year or so.

First off, I gotta say the RR is a tremendous resource and I can't thank the people who put it together enough for spending the time to organize all the material. That being said, when I was first starting out I found myself pretty overwhelmed by all of the information and different options available.

So, I'm in the process of teaching myself web development and figured something like this site might be helpful for others who are starting out and feel overwhelmed by the amount of exercises, progressions, etc... in the RR.

Nothing would make me happier than if people ended up finding this site useful so thoughts and criticism in the comments are most welcome.

If there are any other web dev folks out there (I know there's gotta be some of you in here) I've got the code on gitlab. I'm new to web development and open source, but I'd be thrilled to get a few issues or merge requests and am definitely willing to give this site up to the community if (by some unlikely but awesome circumstance) there's that type of interest.

That's all from me, hope everybody is having a nice day!

    Update on the App/Game Idea

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 06:23 AM PDT

    Hey all,

Back in March I shared an idea for an app I wanted to build: link. The response was very positive and little overwhelming.

I decided to move ahead with the idea with a few modifications along the way.

The first change is the app will only support squats, push-ups, sit-ups and burpees. I know there are many additional moves that could be incorporated, but I wanted to keep the gaming mechanics simple. Via paradox of choice, I can take the app in a lot of different directions by limiting the actual movements to these 4. These 4 moves are a good foundation that most people can incorporate into their regularly scheduled programming, and they don't require any equipment or pull-up bars.

The other big change is in how the energy meter works. Originally it was going to be based on your hero's level and would get stronger as you gained XP. I quickly found that some of my beta testers were finding the pace a little too fast, while others found it way too slow. I decided to change it to adapt to the individual athlete. If you consistently log a lot of reps, your energy meter will grow to allow you to continue adding to your volume. If you take a few days off, it will shrink, but the shrinking happens more gradually than growing. Early on, I had this idealized vision that I could somehow level the competitive playing field in this way, but I think that was misguided.

I still have a lot of ideas from the initial post that I haven't gotten to yet, but the app is far enough along that I'd like to open it up to some more beta testers. Unfortunately I don't have an Android version (yet), but if you're on iOS you can use this link to get the beta.

Would you a website to help people get started with fitness be a good idea?

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 08:25 AM PDT

    Hi!

I always found that the process to getting started in fitness could be pretty confusing. It seems confusing for a lot of people: how I should start, how much I should eat, what should I eat, supplements, routine, etc.

I was thinking of an all-in-one solution to get started. It would be a pretty simple website. You enter, they ask you what your goals are, your level, your informations (physique, habits, whatever) and it gives you custom recommendation,

Let's say Mike wants to lose fat. He gets on the website, says he wants to lose fat and the websites asks him several question: height, weight, size, gender, etc. They also ask him if he has experience in fitness and how often he exercises.

Let's say Mike is not athletic, he doesn't move a lot and he is not good with working out. He tells that to the website and they tell him that he should eat 2000 calories per day, do a simple body weight workout and it recommends him to eat more of X food. It also suggest him to take X supplements.

It's way more interactive than the wiki and is pretty straightforward. With each decision (workout, diet, etc), the website tells the user why it decided to offer him that.

So, if I built this, do you think it would be interesting? Do you think people would use it?

How I would make money: affiliate links on supplements, workout equipment, etc.

How I would promote it: maybe targeted ads or maybe an affiliation with fitness subreddit. (I offer them x% of each affiliate money I make coming from this sub or something like that, TBD and I would have to discuss it with them)

Looking for alternatives to Sled Push

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 11:39 AM PDT

I just moved to a small town and the gym I go to now doesn't have a sled push, even if it did, it's pretty small so it wouldn't have space for it. I'm looking for other workouts I can replace Sled Push with, which would y'all recommend? All help is appreciated.

Advice for my climber friend w/ golfer and tennis elbow

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 09:32 PM PDT

Hey all. My friend is a rock climber and she's been doing calisthenics as well for a while now, but she's ended up with golfer's and tennis elbow (both kinds of elbow tendon problem I guess?).

Anyhow I've helped her put together a big list of core and lower body exercises she can do while she tries to give it a bit of a rest to recover, but I was wondering if anybody on here has suggestions on upper body exercises she could do that won't put stress on or aggravate those tendons/injuries?

    Help with german hangs

    Posted: 24 Jul 2020 02:43 AM PDT

Hello, I have some experience with BW training (can do 10-15 pullups).

My issue is I am too scared to perform german hangs and skin the cats. I know I have the strength to keep myself, its just that when I go vertical upside down I am too scared to turn around and so I forfeit.

Any tips on how to overcome this fear?

    Thanks.

What do you guys listen to instead of music?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 03:57 PM PDT

I tried to listen a lot of genres of music when working out but none of them felt right.

What are some exercises that sharpen reflexes?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2020 04:33 PM PDT

Hi, I'm a boxer in training and I would like to sharpen my reflexes because at my current state I do not feel comfortable with my reaction time. As you may figure, if you're slow to react in boxing it's potentially lethal so I would like to be at my peak condition in that regard.
