Metabolism Doesn't Slow Down Like We Think (Article)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:29 AM PDT

I found this article rather shocking, but very well done. We often think that our metabolism slows during middle age (20s, 30s, 40s), but it turns out that may not be true. According to new research, our metabolism is actually pretty stable during those times. Our metabolism, by weight, is highest when we are infants, and gradually slows until we hit our early 20s. It then remains stable until our 50s or 60s where it begins to slow again. So now you can go out there knowing your metabolism is what it was or close to when you were in your early 20s and get motivated to stay on your journey!

    NSV: Apparently I've aged backwards!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:51 PM PDT

I've been meticulously tracking calories for 5 months (weight loss was extra fast at first because I'm postpartum and a lot of it had nothing to do with fat loss). Around 2 weeks ago I began 30-45 minutes of cycling a day, 20min of mild resistance with exercise bands, and this week a new job that keeps me active. Started at 210lb, obese, and currently I'm down to my healthy weight range at 140lb.

So for background when I was obese people often thought I was around 34 years old. I just accepted that I must be one of those people who look older than they are.

But recently I realized it was honestly just from having a puffy, fat face from obesity. I'm now down 70lb and started a new job, my coworkers noticed I was married and asked me how old I was... and they were shocked because they thought I was 19-21 age range!

I knew face gains were a thing, and I had been admiring them privately... but I was just happy to be rid of my double chin. Hearing a bunch of people I met for the first time reacting that it changed how old I appear so drastically was honestly a shock, and a great one!

Definitely the confidence booster I needed to get through this dang exercise water retention plateau!

My take away? NSVs are just so important to keep you motivated and determined when it starts to get harder, so make sure you don't knock them or ignore them!

Having serious trouble eating healthy when things expire rapidly. Any tips? What are some healthy options that don't expire quickly so we don't have to keep running to the store?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 07:01 PM PDT

Our food keeps going bad on us, which is wasteful and expensive, and then we turn to takeout. Not a lot of healthy options for takeout around here, and honestly, the convenience of takeout is a big reason why we put on weight.

How do you manage healthy food going bad so quickly (especially fruit, fish, etc.) when you A) struggle to go to the store more than once a week because you're way too busy with looming work deadlines, B) have bad luck with food delivery and curbside pickup services because the substitutions are wacky and unpredictable, and C) don't have room for a large freezer and what you currently have is tiny and full of smoothie supplies? Smoothies are my wife's favorite thing ever, unfortunately for the freezer.

Edit: Our humidity is usually in the 90%-99% range, so that's apparently not helping at all. Definitely picking up a mini dehumidifier for the fridge!

[SV] Onederland for the first time in over 20 years. (M39, 5'-11 1/2", SW: 264, CW: 198.5 lbs)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:06 AM PDT

I have to drive my eldest to school here in a bit, but was given this surprise this morning. For the first time in over 20 years, I'm under 200 pounds. My goal was to be there before I turned 40, and I made it with 2 months to spare. I'm sure there will be some fluctuation to come, as there has been this entire time, but to see this with my eyes was a big deal. This community has been a help and inspiration over the last near two years, thank you all for being here, and doing what you do, even if you didn't know you did it!

For anyone wondering, there was no silver bullet. I have been doing IF since I started two years back, I don't eat breakfast, almost ever. Couple times a year at most. Instead, I drink black coffee, or coffee with almond milk. My wife and I have done a couple rounds of whole 30 since I started when we notice we're sliding or feeling like we need a reset. Also, we got a Peloton Bike+ at the beginning of the year, and I try to ride that about three times a week. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

And I let myself be hungry. A lot. It's not as bad as it used to be, and I'm getting better about knowing how much food my body actually needs/wants. In the last 6-9 months I've noticed myself just stopping to eat when I feel full. Past me tended to plow through it, and keep going, so there's some behavioral changes that I didn't try to do that have been pleasant surprises as well.

Good luck everyone out there! You got this!

Trying to lose 100ish pounds in a year (or shorter)

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:04 PM PDT

I've been trying to lose weight off and on for awhile but after going into the dressing room today and seeing how I liked and how all the usual sizes I use to fit can barely get up my thigh, and then going to six flags and not being able to sit in any of my favorite rides, I knew it was time for a change. Currently I'm around 297lbs and I wanna be 200 before I hit 21 (my 20th birthday was a few weeks ago) but I don't know where to start. I've always been a big and strong guy but I just wanna bring the body fat down any tips on what to do, or the best to reach my goal and sustain it? I got my BMR which is around 1950 calories so ima try and eat around 2000 calories a day, or close to it

How to lose the last 15 pounds?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:13 AM PDT

Hi everyone! I started my weight loss journey in December 2020. The first 20 pounds came off so fast and easily that I was both encouraged and motivated to keep going. However, as I should have expected, the weight loss slowed as I got closer to a healthy weight. I am officially 50 pounds down and no longer obese, but I'm still 15 pounds from my goal. What tips do you have for staying motivated at the end? I know it's going to be slower going but what is a realistic timeframe? For reference, I try to eat healthy but don't follow a particular diet or count calories. I walk and ride a recumbent bike 5ish times a week. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Also, does anyone know how to target upper arm fat specifically?

Edit Thanks for all the advice everyone! I will definitely look into resistance training and target my biceps/triceps to tone my arms the way I want. https://imgur.com/ZrEF4I5.jpg https://imgur.com/TKoUmtN.jpg https://imgur.com/i9WRlAR.jpg

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 14 August 2021? Start here!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:31 PM PDT

    Today is your Day 1?

    Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren't sure of how to start? Don't worry! "How do I get started?" is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we've found most useful for getting started.

    Why you're overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

    Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

    Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don't cheat the numbers. You'll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

    Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you're eating you won't stick to it.

    Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it's own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

    Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn't necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

    Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don't need perfect. We just want better.

Didn’t eat ice cream today when I very easily could’ve

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:38 PM PDT

I have a binge eating disorder, and obviously this crashes with my weight loss journey. So far I've lost 35 pounds, and which I'm not the most proud of. I've had a lot of set backs, mental health issues. So much going onto me.

To try and stop binges, I gave myself a binge day twice a month. Today is that day.

I work at DQ, so i get ice cream and food for free. I've been pretty good holding myself back with the ice cream.

When my shift started today I made a blizzard, put it in the freezer, and went on.

I'm currently in my last 30 minutes, on my break. As I'm sitting here I realize..I don't want to eat it. It's not appetizing to me. And then I wondered if any ice cream we got sounded good..and it doesn't.

So I'm excited to go home, do a workout, and eat some wheat things with cheese.

    Frustratingly slow weight loss

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:16 AM PDT

I've been trying to lose weight for over a year now, and I've barely lost anything. I'm eating at 1200 calories a day (I weigh my food and count calories for everything), but I've lost less than 10 pounds in the past year. My doctor says he's not concerned about my weight, but I still want to shave a few pounds. I'm currently 132 lbs at 4'11, and I'd like to get down to 115-120 but it just feels like at this rate that's never going to happen. I feel like I need to drop my calories below 1200, but I really love food and I really don't want to. Any suggestions from others with a short stature trying to lose weight and having difficulties? I also can't walk.

    Time to start again. Again.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:07 PM PDT

30f|SW230|CW230|GW150 A few years ago I lost 40lbs. Since then, I have gained back 50lbs. My life has gotten quite hectic now and I have new motivations to get healthy again. I got pregnant mid September 2020. Had my son at the end of March. Which means he was ten weeks early. Life has been even more stressful because of that. He was in the NICU for 83 days. Now that he is around, I want to get healthy again so that I can keep up with him as he gets older.

I currently weigh about 230lbs. For now I want to get to 200lbs. I am hoping to accomplish this before the new year. Eventually I would like to get to 150lbs. But for now, 200lbs would be great.

My plan: 1. Count calories - This helped me so much the first time. Knowing what I am eating helps me plan my days. I tried doing this once without counting and it did not work. For now, the loseit app says I can have about 1400cals a day. 2. No pop or candy. These two things are not good for me. They are a trigger food for me. I know I can't have one or two. I will get off the wagon and burn it down to get more. Better to not allow it. 3. More walking. I live in a small town, so no gym access. But I can walk. 4. More protein. With a low calorie amount, I want to make sure I am feeling full. Hoping to get 100gm of protein a day.

I am curious if anyone has a good protein shake they recommend? I don't want to spend money and then find out I don't like it. I like chocolate flavoured ones.

Reached a backslide point and need advice; stopping being the enabler of binging in my house

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:59 PM PDT

    31F. SW 300, CW 280.

I've lost 20 lbs so far and I'm pleased with progress though I still have a long way to go. I am dedicated to becoming healthier. But I have reached the point in the change where I always backslide and I need a way to stay the course. The backslide trigger point is that my spouse has started complaining about seeing my healthier food in the house, and begging me multiple times a day to end this change and just binge with him.

I'm the grocery shopper of the house. I'm still buying him all the stuff he asks for, except sweets, because that is a weak point for me. It's far easier for me to have willpower at the grocery store than at home. I'm buying fruit instead. I'm still getting him chips and sugary cereal and ramen and frozen pizza and whatever else he wants. I'm also not bringing home takeout anymore, just as much for budget reasons as for health. Those are literally the only things affecting him and I've told him if he is really jonesing for sweets or takeout he's welcome to go get them on his own.

I'm not asking him to change anything, I'm only asking him to respect my changes. He says he wants to be healthier too and he knows he's being irrational. He feels judged by seeing my healthier foods in the pantry and on my plate. And even more, he feels like I'm forcing unwanted changes in our marriage by no longer using binge eating as a bonding mechanism.

I recognize that I was an enabler and co-binger for years because I'd buy whatever he asked for and indulge alongside him. Our diets and our spending were out of control. It feels very much like recovering from an addiction. But I can't live that way anymore. Is there any answer to this besides just powering through? And if it just means powering through, any tips on finding additional willpower? Because of course I still crave these behaviors too, but I can't give up on myself again.

Down 15 pounds :) try cutting out juice

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 09:03 PM PDT

I've been struggling to lose weight this past year and some of last year. I kept counting calories but I wasn't measuring food so I over-ate a ton.

One huge thing is that I kept drinking too much juice! I should have cut juice out a long time ago. Everyday at least 400 - 600 or more calories was juice.. I never really paid attention. I just drink a LOT of juice at all hours of the day so removing it was the missing piece.

The worst part is that I've been through this whole cico lose weight plan before. I was originally 185 pounds and went down to 146 after cutting out juice in 2017. It was amazing.

I'm 2020 I decided to try again after sky rocketing to 205 pounds. I was struggling up until maybe 2 months ago. Got rid of juice just like in my original journey and now I'm down to 190 pounds 😊 I can't wait to lose 30 more pounds.

I hate it when my mom freaks out that I "haven't eaten anything" when I just had a protein/meal replacement shake 15 minutes ago.

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 05:43 PM PDT

Even if I wasn't trying to lose weight, I love drinking shakes when it's a busy morning or too hot to cook anything to avoid heating up the house.

My mom does this thing where she'll freak out because I haven't eaten anything when I just literally just finished drinking a shake not too long ago.

    Mom: "It's 2pm! You haven't eaten anything"

Me: "I'm still full from the shake, and even though it's liquid, it has everything a complete meal has. I'm fine"

But she'll keep pestering me to eat. I do eat solid food, which is at dinner. I replace two meals with shakes, and other solid foods include snacks, such as a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Her pestering gets so bad, sometimes I'll just eat something so she can stop bothering me. This has been a constant cycle, and because of this, I have trouble losing weight. The thought of her just asking if I've eaten anything causes me stress.

If I feel so much as a leg cramp she'll immediately blame it on how I'm eating.

Any suggestions? I always fail to lose weight because of this.

mom’s food or food i cook myself?

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 01:50 AM PDT

i am 17F, living with my parents as i leave for university in a few months. i've been on the weight loss grind for about a year now, and cook all my meals by myself as i find it easier to count calories and macros that way.

the thing is- i've been thinking about something for a while now: i will only be living with my family for a few more months, then i will move out to another country actually. i'm indian, and ever since i started making my own food i stopped making indian cuisine and the guilt is horrible. but the food i make now is mostly western and fits my calorie limit so ahHh i don't know what to do.

my family (parents and sister) eat their meals which my mom cooks together, while i make mine and eat alone.

do you think i should start eating with them? i have a feeling my mom might be feeling hurt by this but not expressing it, and that's the last thing i want.

    what should i do?

What is the best way to start losing weight?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 10:27 AM PDT

I'm a 20 year old female, 5'3 and 286lbs so pretty overweight to say the least lol. I've started eating less and eating healthier this week, eating about 1200 calories a day and only drinking water and diet soda. I don't get much exercise besides walking my dog, so I'm definitely considering getting a gym membership.

Since I'm new at this, I'd like some tips lol. I've been told that because I'm overweight, it'll be easier for me to lose some weight than for an average person. What would be a somewhat realistic goal? I've read that it's normal to lose 1lb a week, but to me that doesn't seem like a lot lol

normal weight, but still have a decent amount of fat in the thigh/butt area

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:41 PM PDT

I started off borderline overweight/normal weight according to bmi and looked pretty chubby, I've gotten myself to a normal weight and I've noticeably lost fat from my face and upper body. But I still have a lot of fat in my thighs and butt and as a male I'm pretty self conscious of this. Like my upper body is skinny and my thighs are pretty fat

For what it's worth I'm able to fit into smaller jeans so I guess my butt has gotten smaller but it's still bigger than average and big compared to the rest of my body

When I look online the two opposing pieces of advice I see are that

    1) The place with the most fat is the last place you'll lose it so you should keep trying to lose weight until it's gone

    2) Losing even more weight won't help and it's time to start working out (I don't workout at all currently)

Has anyone had experience with this? I'm not sure which way to go

    Chewing gum to avoid snacking?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 05:27 PM PDT

I personally used sugar free chewing gum to avoid snacking throughout the day and it works really well, it's great advice to avoid snacking but I found a downside to it.

I used to have a pack of gum with me at all times at work and a 2 litre water bottle, and I'd chew gum to curve the urge of wanting to snack and it really helped. The downside is that at the end of the day I wouldn't have had enough of my water and I'd not be properly hydrated. Since I was tricking myself I was full, I was also tricking myself that I was hydrated and not drink water. The days I didn't have gum I'd finish the bottle easily and avoid the same hunger. It isn't to say chewing gum is bad or doesn't work but I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you can, use water to fill up instead of/or in addition with chewing gum to curve hunger/snack urges.

Not sure if this is even relevant to anyone or if this is news, helpful or anything but I just wanted to share something I had noticed of my own habits.

Experiences/tips on losing weight on birtcontrol

    Posted: 14 Aug 2021 12:56 AM PDT

I was wondering if anyone else has had the experience of finding it really hard to lose weight on birtcontrol?

I was on bc in the past (Daylette), gained weight, then went off the pill and lost 15 kg pretty easly. Now about a year ago I went on bc again (Nuvaring) and slowly but steadily gained all that weight back.

I've been trying to lose it for a month now and I barely lost 1 kg. I've been doing the same thing that worked for me the first time (CICO 1200 kcal, about 1 h of cardo a day).

So did anyone have this experience? Should I go lower with my calories/more activity? Is there a type of bc that doesn't affect weightloss as much?

Anyone else feel a lack of respect for their fitness level because they aren't shredded?

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 08:40 AM PDT

If you can't tell from the subject, I'm frustrated. People treat me like a complete novice just because I look "normal" and it freaking hurts. Let me explain.

    Context:

I'm an active person. My BMI has ranged from 19.8 at my leanest to 24.3 at my heaviest. Neither is unhealthy territory. Right now I'm at 120 pounds, 22.7 BMI, which is in the middle. I consistently strength train with some cardio. I'm also a healthy eater. I eat lots of veggies, whole foods, grains, lean meats and pay attention to macros/micros. One area I self-admittedly struggle in: eating at a calorie deficit. I'm a small woman and, even with weight training and cardio, I still try to stick to a max of 1,400 calories, which is hard when everyone around you can crush 2,000+ calories and eat fried food and still not gain a pound. I am right now in a cut cycle and it's tough, but I'm seeing results, just as i have before and i know it works as long as i stick with it.

    Now here's my frustration:

Despite knowing that I put in a lot of conscious consideration into my health and fitness, I feel like i get zero respect from people about it because I don't look like a bodybuilder or very lean.

Example 1: I overheard a coworker talking about a gym and thought he meant the one next door to our place of work, which we get a free membership for. I was planning to go that very same day to sign up so i eagerly asked, "Are you talking about the gym next door? I'm planning to go later to sign up!" and his response was, "You go to the gym??" It was humiliating, he said it in front of a room of people, and it just screamed, "I don't take you seriously" or "You don't look like someone who works out". I want to stress, he did not say it like, "You go to THAT gym?" so the connotation was clearly not that.

Example 2: That SAME night, I was venting to my roommate that it's always been a struggle for me to lose body fat and that I was tired of having to be so careful in order to gain a lower BMI whihc, admittedly, I aim for because I like the aesthetic look of definition. Her response? "Well those HelloFresh meals are very unhealthy." Which dumbfounded me because I only order those once or twice a month AND i've talked to her before about how i give myself lower portions of carbs and cut out a lot of the cooking oil/fats and salt. I reminded her of this and she's like, "Oh yea, that's smart! I didn't realize you did that." Then it becomes apparent that she also doesn't realize that I go to the gym 4-5 times a week because she works super late and by the time she gets home i'm showered and in my pajamas.

By the end of the conversation and that day of back-to-back judgment, I just wanted to cry. How can both these people be SO ignorant?

The answer to me seems simple: Unless you look the part, people are inclined to believe you aren't making a genuine effort or genuine good choices when it comes to your health and fitness. It's frustrating bullshit, plain and simple.

The point of this post isn't to find a solution (although I'm certainly open to advice if you got it!) but to instead offer solidarity to those who feel like they've experienced this as well...

    YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

    YOU ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE.

YOU ARE WORKING HARD ON YOUR HEALTH AND FITNESS.

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED IN YOUR JOURNEY.

AND THOSE PEOPLE CAN KISS YOUR FAT GLUTES!!

    Okay thank you, rant over...

I’m going to do my best!!

    Posted: 13 Aug 2021 05:05 PM PDT

    Hello!!!

I am trying to put all of my energy sharing this, because if I don't I know the anxiety will just eat me up and I will hide forever but!!

I just wanted to share that I am doing my best to lose weight. It's extremely difficult, I am a 23 yr old who weighs 213 lbs, and it's a really bad feeling. I don't think I've taken any photos or had any of my photos taken (when I'm by myself, if I'm in a group I can somehow hide my body hahaha) since I was 14-15 years old?? And it's just a horrible horrible feeling. I really just want to love myself, and I know I shouldn't use body weight to love myself, but I am still in the process to change that mentality.

My weight has constantly fluctuated, I actually went from 208 to 196 early this year, and school had me gaining weight to reach 213 (which is the highest I've ever been, and the highest I hope to be). And I think if I can lose that weight before I can do it again!!!

One day, I'll be able to come back here and share to you all that I love myself and how I look, but for now, that is all I can say. I hope that you all have a wonderful day/night, and that we all get to the goals we set for ourselves!!
