Hey Everybody. Welcome to the Spring 2021 Loseit Challenge: 90s Cartoons!

Are you ready for the most RADICAL AND EXTREME challenge yet! Bust out your Fruit Gushers, strap on those moon boots, and prepare to get slimed! It's the 90s Cartoons Loseit Challenge!

    What are Loseit Challenges?

This challenge is a team-based "competition" that will last for 6 weeks. During the challenge you will be assigned to one of 6 teams, set a weight-loss goal for the challenge, and then weigh in weekly, working to be at or beyond that goal by the end of the challenge.

Each week, in addition to their weight, challenge members can choose to log their steps and activity minutes. Teams will compete in friendly head to head battles weekly for step totals and activity minute totals. This is optional, but encouraged!

Every Friday there will be a new post in r/loseit and r/LoseitChallenges with links and instructions for each week's weight in and activities. Your team captains will also share all the information you need on your team's Discord server.

This round your hosts are u/hxcjosh23 and u/unrepentant_thinner

Overcame an urge for fast food on the way to work.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 06:17 PM PDT

I'd been saving my big meal for when I started my swing shift. I've been really good on calories al week.

I was really feeling the cravings hard and was passing all the exits to work thinking about all the fast food at each one. Mentally, I was ready to break down and get something.

But then I had two thoughts:

    1. I knew if I stopped and had fast food, it wouldn't be physically or mentally satisfying. I would get excited while I eat and then regret it almost instantly.

    2. I knew I had a really satisfying healthy meal waiting for me at work, all I had to do was make it to my office and it would be waiting for me.

I made the grudging decision to power past the exits and drove a little faster than I should. After a few exits, the cravings faded and I felt myself again.

Had a nice healthy dinner that felt filling and was regret free.

Parents are losing weight faster than me and telling me I’m doing it wrong.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 08:28 AM PDT

I've lost 27 lbs since December of last year doing CICO and being more active. I've had some weeks of severe anxiety and small injuries that I didn't want to make worse. So while my progress is slower than I would have liked, it's still progress.

My parents have started alternate fasting two months ago (only eating every other day) and have lost 35 lbs each. They were going on and on about how great it is and how fast they're losing weight and how I should try it and all the while I was making sure they knew how incredibly proud I am of them. Honestly it is amazing! The only concern (which I shared) was about sustainability if they ever decided to go back to eating every day again. They just assured me that this was a life style change and they didn't plan to go back to their old eating habits. Which is great! Like seriously, I want them healthy and around for a long time.

But then I tell them that I've also lost 27 lbs since December and they're like "cool". That's it. And then they went back to telling me to do their diet instead because mine wasn't working as well.

Idk man, I've had weeks were i "fell off" the wagon and didn't go to the gym and ate whatever I wanted and STILL lost weight those weeks. My mind set on food has shifted, even when I "binge" now, subconsciously I'm eating less and making better choices knowing that I am stressed and will binge later, so I chill out on my other meal intakes for the day.

It just felt like they expected so much praise for what they accomplished and then gave me none for what I did.

Edit: thanks everyone for being so supportive and kind. Realizing I should probably be kinder to myself as well and be motivated within myself and not from other sources. This community is honestly amazing.

    Still Trying.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 10:07 PM PDT

    Back in Black: https://imgur.com/a/47qU01U

I tend to get caught up in the numbers of it all.

How much I've lost. How much time has passed.

I always feel like I should've lost more. Should've lost faster. Should've done this. Should've done that.

Today, I'm just taking a moment to really be present.

Although there have been "breaks" and "pauses," I've been working on losing weight since January 2020.

I'VE BEEN TRYING FOR OVER A YEAR TO LOSE WEIGHT.

    I didn't quit.

    I'm STILL trying.

Lately, I've been feeling the leanest I've felt in a long time and like I've really recommitted to this journey.

Here's to sustainability. Here's to healthy habits. Here's to sweating. Here's to face and body changes. Here's to rich and full laughter. Here's to uninterrupted joy.
Here's to engaging in less and less negative self talk. Here's to every time I said no to something that doesn't serve me, and said yes to myself instead. Here's to saying no - in general. Here's to ordering small. Here's to driving BY the drive thru. Here's to packing your lunch. Here's to water. Here's to being your own cheerleader. Here's to working out when everything in your spirit doesn't want to. Here's to reaching step goals. Here's to staying close to calories. Here's to not being peer pressured out of your new lifestyle.

Here's TO YOU. Here's TO ME.

    I'll see you at GOAL.

    65 pounds lost since July 26, 2020. 41F, 5’4”, 208—> 143

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:31 PM PDT

Strict keto and 18:6/16:8 IF for the first seven months. Transitioned to low carb over the past couple of months to prepare for maintenance mode; kept the IF. I do it the easy way by skipping breakfast and eating lunch between 11:00 and noon (later if I'm busy at work). Minimal cheat meals and zero entire cheat days. No snacking between my two meals; lots of coffee, water, and sparkling water. I rarely feel hungry between meals thanks to IF.

Very little exercise apart from occasional walks or walk/runs 1-3 times per week. I recalculate macros and TDEE with every ten pounds lost for general awareness. However, I do not formally track calories or weigh food. I weigh myself every morning but officially "weigh in" on Sundays. I do this in the Notes app on my phone.

UGW = 135 but I will reassess when I get there. So close! What I've learned is that weight loss and maintenance consist of the accumulation of small choices daily, over time. Those small choices lead to the development of habits, which come in clutch on days when motivation is nonexistent.

I wish everyone here a successful journey. I have learned so much from this sub. I'm happy to answer questions if that can help anyone out there.

I've lost 23lbs since the 1st week of March. Here's the secret:

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 11:37 AM PDT

    Eat less. Move more.

You need to look up your calorie estimate for weight loss. Here: https://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html

Eat the lesser amount of calories. For now, eat whatever you like. BUT count it. You will quickly see that a salad will get you further than a piece of cake or McDonalds. Or chips.

Get a fitness watch. Even a cheap one. $35. Amazon. Do it.

Walk and burn, walk and burn. Feel your body. Don't over do it. But you should feel it. Push yourself to stick to your calorie number. Walk daily. Shoot for 8000 steps. 10000 maybe. Whatever time you have, walk it.

You can even walk inside. YouTube virtual treadmill. Go on a city walk in Prague or something in front of your tele. Make sure you look up how to walk in place with proper form.

It will be slow at first. But you WILL lose weight.

I should have done this a decade ago*.

    • Male. 33. I've gone from 244 to 222 March to mid-April.

NSV: Visibly noticed my weight loss for the first time

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 03:35 PM PDT

    F29, 5'0", SW 168, CW 158, GW 126

In England Covid has meant all non-essential shops were shut from Christmas to 12th April, and in that time I've been trying to lose weight. I'm only down 10lbs, but I've started running regularly, massively increased my water intake and learned about staying in a calorie deficit. So I've been learning healthy habits, but not seeing a huge drop on the scale which has been a bit disappointing.

This week I finally had the chance to go clothes shopping - I have no warm weather stuff, and my current clothes are starting to wear out after so long. So I was in a shop queue waiting to buy something and caught sight of myself in a full length mirror: I looked slimmer! I could see it round my middle and in my legs, and my top looked a little loose on me. I didn't look massively different but just to appear a bit slimmer was a massive confidence boost. I don't have any big mirrors at home so it was a nice surprise!

Another smaller victory was buying and feeling comfortable in a pair of jeans; after years of living in leggings as they were comfier on my bigger frame, it felt good to be confident in jeans. It's always good to see the small changes you make are having an impact!

I hit goal weight and I’m having a hard time finding clothes that fit my new body because stores don’t allow you to try clothes on right now

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 10:36 AM PDT

This is more of a vent than anything. So yesterday I finally hit my goal weight. I'm 5'2" and have lost 30 lbs so none of my old clothes fit anymore. I've been basically existing in workout clothes and sports bras due to working from home and having few places to go due to covid.

I was so excited to go on a big shopping spree when I hit my goal weight. I don't even know what styles or cuts flatter my body now. I went last night, spent a bunch of money and wasn't able to try anything on due to covid so I had to wait until I got home to try things on. Not a single thing I had bought fit good or looked right. It was supposed to be such a happy day for me and instead it ended in huge discouragement. Just venting here!

NSV: I can keep up with my toddler nephew on the playground!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:45 PM PDT

I (F, 31, 5'7, SW: 265 lbs, CW: 170 lbs) have been in the process of losing weight for about six years now, and while I'm still not quite where I want to be, I am really happy with the changes I see in myself both physically and mentally. The most recent revelation was the fact that I can now run and play with my nephew, who is 2 years old and absolutely FULL of beans, without getting winded or tired like I used to! I was chasing him, lifting him on the monkey bars, crawling all over the jungle gym with him, running up the slide, you name it. We had an absolute blast and my sister (sitting on the bench with a newborn in her lap) was amazed at my energy levels. She says she can't remember the last time she saw me being so active for so long.

A year ago I only would have been able to manage that for about ten, maybe fifteen minutes before needing a break to catch my breath. Now I can play with him for a full hour, with energy to spare afterward!

I already loved being an auntie, but it's even more fun knowing I can keep up with the little guy :).

    NSW: clothes don’t fit anymore

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:21 PM PDT

I've lost 195 pounds and it's finally happened. I raised my arm up to reach something and my bra came up to- in the middle of Best Buy and then I put my phone in my "skinny jeans" and they fell down. I guess it's time to buy new clothes.

The problem is that I don't really want to buy new clothes if they're going to be to big in 2 or 3 months. I was wearing a 30-32 and I did buy a pair of shorts that were a 24 last month and now their loose too. What kind of clothes allow a good amount of weight loss before they start falling down when you walk? 😆 I mean at least with the pandemic it's not like we get out much, but it's the desert (90f or 32.2c tomorrow). I mean at home I live in swimsuits and dresses that look like tents. How do you justify spending a good amount on clothes when your loosing weight.

The rules said we needed to say how we did it- so I eat 1200 calories a day and only 40-50 carbs a day. I'm a type 1 diabetic and the less carb the lower amount of insulin you need and insulin causes weight gain. I plan my meals and log them into my fitness pal. It helps cause when it gets hectic around here I don't go: I'll just have some of this Mac and cheese I'm feeding the kids. 😂

I'm just starting to really exercise again, because in November of last year I had Necrotizing fasciitis and severe sepsis with multiple organ. I was so surprised at how hard it hit me and how quickly it sapped all my energy and endurance. But I slowly started walking and then cleaning the house and running after the kid. Now I try and swim every day and have started doing Zumba in the pool.

So I guess my main point is eat less and the weight will drop and as things get easier move more.

Day 1? Starting your weight loss journey on Saturday, 24 April 2021? Start here!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:31 PM PDT

    Today is your Day 1?

    Welcome to r/Loseit!

So you aren't sure of how to start? Don't worry! "How do I get started?" is our most asked question. r/Loseit has helped our users lose over 1,000,000 recorded pounds and these are the steps that we've found most useful for getting started.

    Why you're overweight

Our bodies are amazing (yes, yours too!). In order to survive before supermarkets, we had to be able to store energy to get us through lean times, we store this energy as adipose fat tissue. If you put more energy into your body than it needs, it stores it, for (potential) later use. When you put in less than it needs, it uses the stored energy. The more energy you have stored, the more overweight you are. The trick is to get your body to use the stored energy, which can only be done if you give it less energy than it needs, consistently.

    Before You Start

The very first step is calculating your calorie needs. You can do that HERE. This will give you an approximation of your calorie needs for the day. The next step is to figure how quickly you want to lose the fat. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories. So to lose 1 pound of fat per week you will need to consume 500 calories less than your TDEE (daily calorie needs from the link above). 750 calories less will result in 1.5 pounds and 1000 calories is an aggressive 2 pounds per week.

    Tracking

Here is where it begins to resemble work. The most efficient way to lose the weight you desire is to track your calorie intake. This has gotten much simpler over the years and today it can be done right from your smartphone or computer. r/loseit recommends an app like MyFitnessPal, Loseit! (unaffiliated), or Cronometer. Create an account and be honest with it about your current stats, activities, and goals. This is your tracker and no one else needs to see it so don't cheat the numbers. You'll find large user created databases that make logging and tracking your food and drinks easy with just the tap of the screen or the push of a button. We also highly recommend the use of a digital kitchen scale for accuracy. Knowing how much of what you're eating is more important than what you're eating. Why? This may explain it.

    Creating Your Deficit

How do you create a deficit? This is up to you. r/loseit has a few recommendations but ultimately that decision is yours. There is no perfect diet for everyone. There is a perfect diet for you and you can create it. You can eat less of exactly what you eat now. If you like pizza you can have pizza. Have 2 slices instead of 4. You can try lower calorie replacements for calorie dense foods. Some of the communities favorites are cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash in place of their more calorie rich cousins. If it appeals to you an entire dietary change like Keto, Paleo, Vegetarian.

The most important thing to remember is that this selection of foods works for you. Sustainability is the key to long term weight management success. If you hate what you're eating you won't stick to it.

    Exercise

Is NOT mandatory. You can lose fat and create a deficit through diet alone. There is no requirement of exercise to lose weight.

It has it's own benefits though. You will burn extra calories. Exercise is shown to be beneficial to mental health and creates an endorphin rush as well. It makes people feel *awesome* and has been linked to higher rates of long term success when physical activity is included in lifestyle changes.

    Crawl, Walk, Run

It can seem like one needs to make a 180 degree course correction to find success. That isn't necessarily true. Many of our users find that creating small initial changes that build a foundation allows them to progress forward in even, sustained, increments.

    Acceptance

You will struggle. We have all struggled. This is natural. There is no tip or trick to get through this though. We encourage you to recognize why you are struggling and forgive yourself for whatever reason that may be. If you overindulged at your last meal that is ok. You can resolve to make the next meal better.

Do not let the pursuit of perfect get in the way of progress. We don't need perfect. We just want better.

1/2 weeks after eating healthily and exercising regularly, I feel the fattest I’ve ever been. This repeatedly happens and makes me lose motivation. Is this common? Does anyone else experience this?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 01:18 PM PDT

I've struggled with my weight for the past few years. I know not to expect progress overnight and that it's a steady thing, and most people don't see any changes for 2-3 months but every time I track my calories and start exercising, roughly after 1/2 weeks I have a few days where I look in the mirror and feel like I've put on another dress size or 2. My body feels softer than usual and I feel quite flabby. I find every time I have a day like this, I end up becoming unmotivated and emotionally eat.

I'm recognising these feelings and just letting them pass me by this time, which feels like a small victory, but it left me wondering if this is quite a common thing to happen/ if anyone out there experiences this??

    Thanks 😊

I need some motivation not to beat myself up for not seeing any progress during this period due to stress. It's been so frustrating.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:06 PM PDT

I'm currently going through a very stressful period because of exams! I've noticed that I bloat more than usual and I've been sleeping pretty bad, like 4/5 hours per night. I wake up in the morning feeling so lethargic and the scale hasn't really budged. Also, my hunger is through the roof some days and not because I'm restricting calories, I guess it's hormone related and I hate it because then there are days where I have zero or normal appetite. I keep eating at a deficit and do my usual daily walk but it seems that everything I eat and drink is making me plateau or gain weight. A couple of nights ago I drank a lot of water and I'm not sure whether stress was the culprit here or what but I looked pregnant, I bloated so much that I couldn't sleep at all and I couldn't even pass gas, btw I'm also experiencing bowel discomfort. But...Can stress really be the cause? It's frustrating to keep doing everything right and not see any progress on the scale but besides that I NEED to sleep and I can't and this is so frustrating. I'm scared that I won't get any magical whoosh eventually. Keep in mind that my exams will last till the beginning of July, I'm not sure I'll handle this situation for 2 months straight. Do you have any tips, advice?

I gained 10 kg during the lockdown and now I don't want quarantine to end.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:29 AM PDT

So, I basically realized quite abruptly that I have put on more than 10 kg during the past two months (from 60 to 72). I am horrified. I knew that lockdown had an impact on my belt, but I did not expect it to be that drastic.

And the worst thing is that I did not realize until I saw a picture of my first day out with friends in ages. And now I am cursing myself. How could I have let this happen? Well, I do kinda know. I put all of my attention on my career (I have 3 jobs and I am writing a Master Thesis) and completely neglected my health, went through 2 family losses in a month, and generally used food to escape that deep, deep depressive slump (with obviously no effect).

I rushed to some tough love measures: I am doing a low cal diet ( around 1200 kcal, but I had days in which I was under 1000 - trying to avoid that), intermittent fasting, completely removed bread and refined sugars and I started working out online, despite being very, very bad (hopefully it will improve).

Still. I am constantly aware that I have never been so unfit and overweight. My weight fluctuated but never broke a certain threshold. Now it most definitely did -and by a lot! And it is ruining my life. I lost all of my confidence and I hate myself.

I keep thinking about it.I don't want to see or speak with people anymore. I struggle to focus on work. I am spending most of my free time looking at weight loss videos. I don't know how to stop, really.

Damn, I even had a dream in which my family kicked me out of the house and all my friends abandoned me because of my weight gain (I know it is very stupid and unrealistic, but this is what my subconscious is up to).

What can I do to like live again?

I just wish I never reached this point.

Hi all! 25F, I've been lurking here for a bit and apologies if this isn't the right place for this but I would like some advice on what to do or see if anyone else in a similar boat.

My partner and I have been together for 3 years and I love her so much but weight has always been a sensitive topic in our relationship.

We've both gained over 50 pounds since we started dating and we're always talking about losing weight but never stick to anything consistent or fall back into old habits because we had a "bad week"

I'm committed to losing weight but when I talk to my partner about things I am doing (CICO, portion control, walking more etc.) she rolls her eyes. It's exhausting to hear her complain about her weight every day and when I try to encourage new changes she gets defensive or makes me feel like a villain taking her happiness away.

It feels so isolating to be on this journey without her and I know that everyone is different but I am not sure what else I can try. I offer to cook our meals but she hates leftovers and when I say no to sweet treats or take-out she feels rejected. I've even offered to pay for therapy to help her understand her relationship with food.

Does anyone have successful tools or tactics they've done with their SO to lose weight together or any tips to navigate losing weight without their partner?

Anyone having trouble processing themselves at a lower weight?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 09:33 AM PDT

I think the title requires some explanation. I've never been very overweight, but not liking my body and wanting to be thinner has been with me my entire adult life. I'm currently 2 kg away from my goal. For the past few years, at the end of the year, I weighed a little less than the year before (as opposed to about ten years ago, when every year I gained a bit of weight). My partner and I are currently trying to lose those last few pesky kilograms together, both doing pretty well. And now I've decided that I might need to be at maintenance for a bit, because I'm psychologically utterly unprepared to be at my "goal" weight. WTF will I obsess about? How does liking my body fit into my personality? I've spend my ENTIRE adult life striving for this. Basically, I'm having trouble processing and feel like, weirdly, I'm not ready.

I want to get there. I want to get the little voice out of my head that focuses on everything that's wrong with my body. I know it's a bigger issue that extends to how I view life in general, and I don't want to hit the goal just to find something wrong again and set a new goal. I guess I'm putting too much "weight" in my "weight loss" (omg I'll let myself out). Just wanted to know if anyone else is experiencing this.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

NSV: Fingers touched in my first yoga bind ever!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:21 PM PDT

    F/28/5'5", SW:215, CW:177, GW:145

I started doing yoga a few months before the pandemic, and then took a yearlong break while all the gyms were closed. I was always amazed by the yogis who could get into full binds. It felt like I was such a long way away from being able to bind (and forget about handstands) and I blamed it on my lack of flexibility.

I just started going to the gym again (thanks vaxx!) and have been going to yoga once or twice a week for a few weeks. The instructor last night suggested that we go into a bind during class, and I felt pretty stable so I wanted to see how close I could get, and MY FINGERS TOUCHED. I realized that, while I still have work to do on my flexibility, the extra chub I had been carrying around for so long was the main reason I'd not been able to bind before. I had been physically getting in my own way!

Not only yoga, but all of the exercise I've been doing lately (weights, jogging, HIIT) have been easier and more enjoyable, and I've been able to up the frequency and intensity. I've lost 23 lbs since February (the rest was slowly prior to that) doing mostly plant-based CICO and walking, which translates to nearly 4" off of my waist and hips. Can't wait to see where I go from here!

Tl;dr: Exercise is so much easier after you've lost some weight. If you don't like exercising when you're big, give it another shot when you get some chub out of the way.

Clean bulk or maintenance to get rid of "skinny-fat" physique?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 01:05 AM PDT

I am currently at a skinny fat phase, I have been at for the past year and it's gotten worse with the pandemic and closing of the gyms. I'm 19, 5"11, 150lbs, I'd like to know whether I should clean bulk or just eat at maintenance (i keep seeing about how this could help lean out a bit).

My workout routine would be 4 days a week and consist of two days bodyweight/light dumbell exercises and then two days sprinting HIIT.

Any advice is really appreciated, I've been struggling to find a straight forward answer for a while even if the answer will take me some time to get rid of the skinny-fat physique.

Back on the count and I want to share this Food Stock Google Sheet template for anyone who likes having a calorie-filtered inventory of their food

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 05:32 PM PDT

I shared this over a year (?) ago and a lot of people found it immensely helpful. It's laid out so that even if you aren't a super skilled sheets user, you can still get something out of it. If you give yourself a quick primer on Filters you can do all kinds of things like:

That Get section? Filter that, and you have your grocery list. Drop your Calories section down to Light and your grocery list gets a lot healthier. As a tool this is meant to complement apps like MFP and Supercook.

It's set to copy, so all you need to do is log in to your google account and it will create a file for you. You can alter it as necessary.

I'm a former restaurant cook, so I've got a lot of insight and skills to build on. It worked for me last time, and I find a lot of that comes from taking it beyond just counting, and also using information to create prep and storage shortcuts.

If you understand not just food, but the way we process and use food, it expands the data view and allows you to create meals without getting caught up in the granular details. I personally find that a lot more manageable, especially when I'm looking at things from components > meal. Having one view for that makes the issues of searching and acquiring less involved.

If you're interested in following my meal creations, I'll be posting them in the future over in r/1200isplenty

I want to lose weight but my digestive disorder makes it so hard

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I've been struggling with chronic idiopathic constipation for over 2 years. It causes me constant pain, discomfort, and depression. No matter what my lifestyle is like, which doctor I visit, which medication I try, nothing works.

I'm at a healthy BMI but I carry excess fat especially on my tummy. I want to lose some weight and tone up to increase my confidence but my digestion doesn't let me.

No matter how healthy I eat and how active I am, I still feel terrible because of my CIC. I feel the exact same when I eat healthy as I do when I eat junk. My appearance also stays the same even if I'm very consistent with being healthy.

I feel like I just can never feel good or look the way I want no matter how much work I put into it and I end up giving in to temptations of junk because there's never any payoff and it makes me so unmotivated. Am I bound to be this way forever? Is it even worth trying anymore? What can I do to lose this weight when it seems completely impossible? Please give me something guys...

Need some advice: My gf has an amazing metabolism and living with her is making me gain weight. What can i do?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2021 07:19 PM PDT

Me and my gf have been living together for a year now, and im starting to notice im taking over her eating habits. We're two women but she's s bit taller than me and she eats double the portion i would normally eat. She loves candy, sweets, deserts, and, i've never eaten by night but now i do since i moved here. I've gained 8 to 10 pounds since living with her and i dont want to make it a problem but i dont know how to ask her to help me eat less or better, we always try to be healthy but it never sticks and i cant ask her to eat less of what she enjoys just because i want to have different eating habits. Any tips?
